[대한경제=강주현 기자] Hyundai Motor Company signed an electric vehicle battery supply contract with Samsung SDI for the first time. Given that we have established cooperative relationships with all three domestic battery companies, we expect to see increased competitiveness in the electric vehicle field.

According to related industries on the 23rd, Samsung SDI announced on this day that it signed a contract to supply batteries to be installed in Hyundai Motor Company’s next-generation European electric vehicles for seven years from 2026 to 2032.

This is the first time that the two companies have signed a supply contract in the field of electric vehicle batteries, and the supply volume is known to be equivalent to 500,000 electric vehicles.

According to this contract, Samsung SDI plans to supply the 6th generation prismatic battery P6 produced at its Hungarian plant to Hyundai Motor Company’s European plant. P6 is a product that maximizes energy density by increasing the proportion of nickel in the nickel, cobalt, aluminum (NCA) anode material to 91% and applying proprietary patented silicon material to the cathode material.

As a result, Hyundai Motor Company has established cooperative relationships with all three domestic battery companies, including LG Energy Solutions, SK On, and Samsung SDI.

Hyundai Motors has been receiving batteries from LG Energy Solutions and SK On since long ago. Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 5, Kia EV6·EV9, Genesis GV60·GV70, etc. use SK On batteries, and Hyundai Motor Company’s Kona EV and IONIQ 6 are equipped with LG Energy Solution batteries.

An industry official said, “We expect the domestic industrial competitiveness to expand given that the automobile industry, which dominates the global market, and the three domestic battery companies have all established cooperative relationships.” He added, “It will also be effective in keeping Chinese companies, which have recently been increasing their competitiveness in the global market, in check.” “You will be able to see it,” he said.

It is also worth noting that with this contract, Hyundai Motors began using square batteries, making it possible to diversify form factors. Hyundai Motor Company has mainly used pouch-type batteries. The prismatic batteries that Samsung SDI mainly produces are more stable than other types of batteries due to their excellent durability. For this reason, major automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi are also adopting prismatic batteries.

Hyundai Motor Company and Samsung SDI plan to continue cooperation in the future, including advance development of next-generation battery platforms.

The two companies have been cooperating on the development of next-generation electric vehicle batteries following a meeting between Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong (then Vice Chairman) and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun (then Senior Vice Chairman) in 2020.

At that time, Chairman Chung visited the Cheonan plant of Samsung SDI, which specializes in producing automobile batteries, toured the electric vehicle battery development and production site, and shared opinions on the next-generation battery business with Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
