Samsung finally makes available a completely crazy screen. You may have seen these slabs all at 49 inches wide. Here is an even more extravagant OLED version.
Samsung’s new Odyssey G9 adds an OLED display
The Odyssey G9 range was already the craziest on the market for PC gamer screens. If it does not tell you anything, know that these are ultra-wide type screens. While wide, they sport a screen ratio of 32:9. In height, we find something similar to a normal screen, but in width, it is similar to an airplane cockpit.
A futuristic look, but not only. With all this space, you get regarding two and a half screens in one. Add to that a curvature to improve immersion, and you end up with a beast of a race for the game, but also for work. It’s like having a gigantic visor in front of you with plenty of room to spread out your tabs.
What differentiates this new G9 from the rest of the range is the type of panel: for the first time, we find OLED, which promises infinite contrasts. Each pixel can turn on and off independently to create simply perfect blacks. Colors should pop like never before, even if OLED tends to limit brightness: 250 nits, it’s less than previous versions, so be careful of external light sources.
For the game, we are always on top. The 1440p resolution does not move, having used the original G9 for several days, I found that sufficient. The 240Hz refresh rate is more than necessary for the vast majority of gamers, as is the ridiculously low 0.03ms response time.
Thing to note: the curvature is also lower, going from 1000R to 1800R (the lower the number, the more curved it is). The reason is simple, OLED is much harder to fold, so the G9 OLED will take up more desk space. This is probably why the foot has been revisited, much wider and more aesthetic for my taste.
€2,199 for the Odyssey OLED G9 49-inch
Samsung may have only made concessions on the materials used. Like previous versions, the G9 OLED has a plastic rear structure, allowing it to be light all the same (14.5 kg) and movable without breaking your back.
Allow me to express some doubts regarding the office use of this screen. Having tested the LG UltraGear 45-inch curved OLED, the panel lacks precision, and working on text for hours was not a cakewalk. I still give the benefit of the doubt to Samsung, known to be an excellent screen manufacturer.
The Odyssey OLED G9 PC monitor is just available on Samsung’s official website for the modest sum of €2199. Given the type of product, it is difficult to find a relevant element of comparison.
