Samsung is preparing to launch OLED TVs on the market by making common cause with LG Display. Amazing information, the first city to bet on QLED technology since 2014.
For ages, Samsung exclusively sells QLED TVs, which you can find our comparison here. But according to Chosunbiz, the manufacturer would have bought two million OLED screens from LG Display. The contract would have been initialed for delivery this year. In other words, it seems that Samsung Electronics plans to launch a range of OLED TVs in the future.
This information is surprising, Samsung having abandoned the OLED display since 2014 in order to favor its in-house QLED technology. What’s more, partnering with LG to obtain OLED panels seems like an admission of failure for Samsung, the first cited still being in the shadow of the second in South Korea.
Samsung needs OLED
This new range would therefore tumble alongside the Neo QLED models – known for their cutting-edge Mini LED backlight system. But also of the QD OLED model, synonymous with improved colors and increased brightness compared to conventional OLED.

However, it remains to be understood why Samsung finally decided to produce OLED TVs. According to Chosunbiz, “Samsung Display’s supply of QD OLED panels is limited, so Samsung Electronics needs LG OLED panels to maintain TV production and sales”. An economic reality which contrasts however with the criticisms of Samsung directed once morest the OLED.
When Samsung openly criticizes OLED
On its site, the brand states that the QLED offers “better contrasts and ultra-deep black” but also a highly realistic color rendering. And the tech giant openly slams OLED. The latter would degrade colors and brightness following 20,000 hours of use, much faster than with QLED, says Samsung, which finally points to another big advantage of its technology.
Thanks to a high peak luminance, the QLED would offer very sharp contrasting images, even in a brightly lit setting. Brightness is definitely the sinews of war for TV manufacturers. At the beginning of the year, LG had unveiled the OLED.EX which would allow an additional 30% brightness.
