What is happening at Samsung? On December 30, 2021, the firm posted an invitation on Twitter to come and discover the next Exynos chip this Tuesday, January 11, 2021. The event was expected, it is a new high-end chip that we might find in the Galaxy S22 and above all, it is the realization of a partnership between AMD and Samsung to integrate Radeon technologies into a mobile chip. In other words, certain technologies found today on PS5 and Xbox Series, with the RDNA 2 architecture, would be offered on smartphones.

January 11 has passed and no announcement has been made from Samsung regarding the Exynos chips. Worse, the tweet of December 30 simply disappeared from Twitter. Samsung has backed out of its promise.

A Galaxy S22 100% Snapdragon?

Difficult to know for the moment what happened. We can at least conclude that Samsung is late on its new Exynos chip. With a new smartphone expected to be announced in February, this seems to compromise the theory of a Galaxy S22 that would benefit from this Exynos chip.

Korea Snapdragon
US Snapdragon
Europe Snapdragon

Exynos 2200 is GONE
(It might be released later, but I’m sure that it’s not going to be in Galaxy S22 series.)

This is what Doyhun Kim confidently says on Twitter: the Exynos 2200 would no longer be scheduled for the Galaxy S22, which instead would use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in all regions. Samsung has been used for many years to share the production of its Galaxy S smartphones by region: Snapdragon for some countries and Exynos for others.

How to explain this possible delay of the Exynos 2200? Hard not to think regarding the shortage affecting the semiconductor industry since the start of the pandemic, in particular due to demand greatly exceeding production capacity. In October 2021, Bloomberg reported that an order for components might take 21.7 weeks to be delivered.

It now remains to wait for a communication from Samsung Semiconductor, the branch that deals with the design of Exynos. Otherwise, it will be necessary to note during the presentation of the Galaxy S22 if the entire production has gone to the side of Snapdragon.
