Samsung literally displays the capabilities of its 200MP smartphone sensor

Expected this summer, the Motorola Frontier should be the very first smartphone marketed with the famous ISOCELL HP1 sensor. Samsung has tried to illustrate the performance of such a sensor through a concept video.

What use can a 200 megapixel sensor be? We know that the greater the definition, the higher the level of detail will be, but on smartphones the limits of the display of the terminal are quickly reached. Thus, to demonstrate that equipping a device with such a sensor is not totally useless, Samsung has pulled out all the stops. Through a 1 min 24 s video, the chaebol struggles to impress you. The result ? A shot of a little cat 28 meters by 22, or 616 m²… not really the classic print, then.

An impressive set-up

But beware, it’s not a classic smartphone that made this animal portrait. It’s not even a smartphone at all. It is said sensor, mounted on a large motherboard and equipped with a ring customized for the occasion, and a lens for 24×36 camera, all connected with many cables, including an RJ45, to a computer. Once the shot was made, it was printed and then the different parts were sewn together to give the final result. An impractical system for ordinary mortals, you will agree, especially since Samsung specifies that the result was processed by software and therefore does not reflect the reality that you might expect with a smartphone such as the Motorola Frontier, which would be the first terminal with a 200 megapixel sensor.

What for ?

Such a sensor does not automatically mean that the quality of the photos will be exceptional, because it also depends on the ability to (well) manage the light. On the other hand, it is the guarantee of being able to zoom in and highlight certain perfectly clear details. It is easier here to crop without loss of quality or even to cut a single image to create several new ones and thus highlight one or more details. It is therefore not the size that counts, even if a maximum of pixels make it possible to take photos with very high precision. This type of image is therefore also suitable for photo prints, including in very (very) large formats, where they will remain perfectly sharp.
