Samsung is preparing for its Unpacked 2024 event where it will present the Galaxy S24s. In the meantime, the Korean brand has just launched two new, quite atypical products.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5, a rugged tablet

First there is the tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5. As its name suggests, it is made to endure: it is IP68 certified, which means it is water and dust resistant. It’s also designed to be used with gloves or even wet fingers, and it’s durable enough to survive drops and vibrations.

Performance-wise, it seems promising. Its 8-inch LCD screen offers a maximum brightness of 540 nits, ideal for outdoor use, and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The tablet runs on the Samsung Exynos 1380, a 5 nm ARM processor from 2023. It combines four ARM cores Cortex-A78 at a frequency of 2.4 GHz with four Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz. It is equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash storage, expandable up to 1 TB via microSD.

Its 5,050 mAh battery charges via USB-C or pogo pins, convenient for enterprise fleets. It also integrates a fingerprint sensor in the home button. Samsung promises four major Android updates and five years of security patches.

The Galaxy Tab Active5 will be available in France in mid-January, at 479 euros for the version without 5G and 579 euros with 5G.

Samsung Galaxy XCover7, a mid-range smartphone

Then, Samsung also announced a new rugged smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy XCover7, a more affordable alternative to the Galaxy XCover6 Pro. The XCover7 is designed to withstand extreme conditions: drops, water, dust, vibrations. It benefits from five years of Android software updates.

Its equipment is typical of mid-range smartphones: a 6.6-inch 1080p+ IPS LCD screen with a brightness of 500 nits, which is a bit tight for a smartphone, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, expandable via microSD . The processor is not specified, but it might be a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ SoC. On the photo front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera and a 50-megapixel main camera on the back. The screen is protected by the robust Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+.

The XCover7 features a 3.5mm headphone jack, a replaceable 4,050mAh battery, and a programmable button. Pogo pins allow charging via dock and, unusually, the phone can work via USB-C without a battery.

His price ? 359 euros. A durable and affordable device, but there is undoubtedly better value for money from less recognized brands in this category of products. Samsung’s advantage will undoubtedly be to be able to equip an entire company fleet.
