Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: No new main camera?

Rumors that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 will have a new hinge design to hide the crease in the middle of the display have been around for a while. On the other hand, the leaks on the subject of the main camera go in exactly the opposite direction. The upcoming Fold will reportedly continue to use the same 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN3 main camera that was used in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.

The message comes from the tipster Ice Universe, whose track record is usually pretty good. According to the tip, Samsung uses the well-known ISOCELL GN3 for the Galaxy Z Fold5 instead of the 200 megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor from the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The reason is that “it is impossible to use HP2 on the Fold5”. The tipster does not reveal why this should be impossible. Constraints in the material costs as well as design or space problems in the case of the Fold5 would be conceivable.

If you want to get an idea of what the 50 megapixel ISOCELL GN3 sensor can do, you should read our detailed Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 review. If today’s rumor is true, one can only hope for software improvements. Samsung was able to do something similar with the S23 Ultra. Its 10x zoom camera works even better with the same hardware compared to the predecessor Galaxy S22 Ultra, only due to software optimization.
