Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 review: Improved camera specs, AI, more user-friendly than ever

Hello! Today on Biztalk Gadget, we will review the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 after its launch and some time in the market. We will discuss the device’s performance, including the new AI features that were introduced. For those interested in foldable phones, we will explore why you should consider buying it, and whether those who own the previous model should switch. Let’s dive in.

We’ll start with the specs, comparing changes and similarities to the previous model.

This model features a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED 2X display when unfolded, with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a maximum brightness of 2600 nits (the main difference from the older version is that it has a non-LTPO screen and a brightness of only 1750 nits).

The outer display is a Super AMOLED with a 60Hz refresh rate, a maximum brightness of 1600 nits, measuring 3.4 inches, and has a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels (protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2), with a pixel density of 306 ppi.

The glass sides use Gorilla Glass Victus 2, while the frame is made of aluminum. It is rated for water resistance up to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. As for water spray, there’s no need to worry, as it is definitely waterproof.

The thickness of the device has been improved, reduced by 0.2 millimeters to 14.9 millimeters, but Samsung claims that the newly developed folding mechanism is stronger than before despite the device being thinner.

The weight remains unchanged at 187 grams.

The chipset has improved with each year, and this model uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as well. The GPU has been upgraded to Adreno 750, and it includes 12GB of RAM, resulting in overall better performance.

The battery capacity has increased to 4000 mAh, an increase of 300 mAh. The new folding mechanism allows for a larger battery while maintaining the same weight.

The charging specifications remain unchanged, still supporting 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

Now, let’s move on to the camera features.

Another significant change is that the camera setup has seen considerable improvements. While there was debate regarding the previous model’s camera, this new version has a completely upgraded main lens featuring 50 MP, up from 12 MP, which allows for portrait shots at 2X (46 mm) distance. The aperture is f/1.8 and includes OIS, similar to the previous model.

The ultrawide lens remains at 12 MP, with an f/2.2 aperture and a wide angle of approximately 123 degrees.

In terms of video recording, the device can record in 4K at 30/60fps, similar to the previous model.

For those who utilize the rear camera for selfies, it’s easy to take photos with the external screen. You can either hold the device or set it up. There’s also a Cover Screen Preview feature that lets the person being photographed see themselves on the external display.

The front camera embedded in the large screen remains at 10 MP, with an f/2.2 aperture and a wide angle equivalent to a 23mm lens, capable of recording video up to 4K at 30/60fps, which is an improvement over the prior model.

While the front camera is often used for video calls, the rear camera typically performs better for selfies, especially with its ability to blur backgrounds effectively.

Let’s take a look at some sample photos. Personally, I find the image quality is quite similar to that of the S24 (excluding the Ultra). Additionally, the S series cameras are generally more useful due to the variety of lenses available. However, don’t be put off; users of foldable devices often prioritize fashion and portability instead of solely seeking high camera quality.

Now let’s discuss the AI features.

This launch includes even more advanced AI capabilities than before, sure to catch the attention of S series users.

As you may know, features like Live Translation, sentence arranging, and the ability to circle to search or remove unwanted objects from images are all available.

A new addition is the Sketch to Image feature, which allows you to draw something, and AI will transform your drawing into a beautiful image. It’s simple to use: just press the star icon, select Sketch to Image, draw, and then press Generate; AI will provide about four types of images for you to choose from.

Another feature is Portrait Studio, which I found works primarily with human faces. If the image doesn’t feature a face, this option won’t appear. To use it, just press the star icon, select Sketch to Image, choose your desired style from four current options, and wait for AI to create the image. It’s really that easy.

This summarizes the new AI capabilities. Now, let’s look at how to use the foldable screen for those who have never experienced Samsung’s foldable device. The setup method is the same as in the previous model.

First, you can answer calls by unfolding the phone and hang up by folding it.

The setup process is straightforward. Go to the Call page or initiate a call, and in the upper right corner, tap the three dots. This reveals the settings menu. Look for “Flip Options” and enable “Open Phone to answer calls” and “Close Phone to end calls.” When you receive a call, simply unfold the phone to answer, and fold it again to hang up—no need to press any additional buttons.

For using the external screen to access more applications without unfolding the phone, follow these steps:

First, go to the Galaxy Store and search for the Good Lock app. Download and install it.

Once installed, launch the Good Lock app, click the Life up bar at the bottom, and find the MultiStar app to download. After that, press on MultiStar, then navigate to “I love galaxy foldable,” select “Launcher widget,” and you will see a list of all the apps available for use on the small screen.

But that’s not all. Next, return to the phone’s Settings page, locate the Cover Screen menu, scroll to the bottom where you’ll find the “Apps allowed on cover screen (Labs)” section. Press it, and then select the apps you want to access on the foldable screen.

Try folding the screen, and you will see the app icons you selected appear on the cover screen.

This wraps up the review of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6. Regarding pricing, it starts at 42,900 baht for the 256GB model. In my personal opinion, for anyone seeking a foldable screen phone, I believe this is an excellent choice. The device has undergone extensive development and has been available in the Thai market for some time, making it easier to find accessories compared to many other brands entering the foldable market. Additionally, its design aligns well with the preferences of fashion-forward consumers.

What do you, the audience, think? Please feel free to comment and share your thoughts. For today, I, Saeb Songklod, will take my leave. Goodbye.
