Samsung’s newest large foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold4, has been put through its paces JerryRigTout‘durability test’ at the end of last month, and survived to tell the tale – although it wasn’t left in exactly pristine condition.
Now it’s the turn of its little brother, the Galaxy Z Flip4, to be subjected to the same grueling tests. Let’s see if the smaller device turns out to be more fragile or not.
The Flip4’s exterior screen is covered in glass as you’d expect, which means it scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, with deeper gouges at level 7. In contrast, the screen interior – or rather the screen protector on top – scratches at Level 2, with deeper gouges at Level 3. That means fingernails might actually damage that surface.
The sides of the phone are aluminum, while the buttons are metal, as is the SIM card tray. As with the Fold4, we also see the phone subjected to a lot of dirt, testing the hinge – and all is well. The inner screen protector melts when subjected to an open flame – because it is plastic following all.
Finally, the Flip4 bends backwards quite a bit, not without some strange popping noises coming out of it, but still functional without any issues. However, following being subjected to all this abuse, it no longer shuts down completely. The purpose of this test was to determine how durable a foldable device would be these days, and hopefully if you were wondering, it would provide a helpful answer.
