Samsung on Wednesday announced its new flagship Galaxy S24 range of smartphones earlier than expected, touting new artificial intelligence features as the company looks to start 2024 strong.

The new phone came in three models: S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra. The price of the S24 starts at $1,250, and there is a more expensive version of the S24 Ultra with a storage capacity of 1 TB, which will cost users $1,550, according to CNBC.

In a press conference, Samsung talked regarding the phone’s artificial intelligence capabilities and showed how it can edit photos and search for items using artificial intelligence.

The company uses its own Exynos chips for its S24 and S24+ models, but for Samsung’s top-tier S24 Ultra, which is the company’s largest device among the three devices and comes with more powerful specifications and features.

Samsung said its new Galaxy S24 Ultra phone will come with a host of new AI features, many of which are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for mobile phones, which is designed specifically for AI devices.

Another feature Samsung is touting is the ability to use AI to edit photos, so users can edit reflections from photos they’ve taken, for example if you take a photo of yourself in front of a window.

Or you can move a person from one side of the room to another by dragging them from left to right.

Apple is leading

In the same context, Apple took the lead in the smartphone market for the first time following achieving the highest global sales of iPhone phones in 2023, surpassing Samsung, which continued to lead for 12 years, according to a report by the data company IDC.

Apple’s iPhone sales rose by 3.7% in 2023 to 234.6 million units, and it acquired a market share of 20.1%, ahead of Samsung’s share of 19.4%.

This comes with the support of an increase in the iPhone maker’s sales by 11.6% in the last quarter of 2023, following launching its latest versions of the iPhone last September.

On the other hand, Samsung’s sales fell by 13.6% in 2023 to 226.6 million units, with Huawei regaining its share in China.

Chinese smartphone maker Transsion, whose brands include “Infinix” and “Tecno,” came in fifth place, following Xiaomi, which came in third place, and Oppo, which ranked fourth.

The report also pointed out that global smartphone sales will decline by 3.2% to 1.17 billion units in 2023, the lowest level in a decade as a result of macroeconomic challenges and high inventory.

The IDC report explained that the global smartphone market still faces challenges, however, it is heading towards recovery following growth in the second half of last year boosted the expected recovery for 2024.
