The new Galaxy S23 generation with the Samsung Galaxy S23, the S23 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was released on February 17, 2023.
The new models impress with a slightly modified design, an optimized user interface and a new chip.
As was foreseeable in advance, the upgrade from the S22 to the S23 is probably not worth it due to the small differences. For users of an older generation, on the other hand, the change might definitely be an option.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is already an excellent cell phone that leaves nothing to be desired for most users. In this respect, the question naturally arises as to whether the upgrade to the new generation is worthwhile at all. To answer this question, we have made a comparison of the two generations.

S23 or S22? The design of the two smartphones
The main difference between the two generations when it comes to design is that the new generation’s back is modeled following the S22 Ultra. This means: The respective cameras in the camera module are not installed together, but individually. On the other hand, little has changed on the front and the size and shape of the S23 generation hardly differ from the S22 models. Only the edge display of the Galaxy S23 Ultra does not slope down so much at the edges to make it easier to use the S Pen. So apart from minimal adjustments, the two generations look very similar.
Like the S22, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is available in numerous colors: Cream, Phantom Black, Green, Lavender, Graphite and Lime. You can also buy the S23 Ultra in Skyblue and Red.

Samsung Galaxy S23 and S22: Which smartphone has the better camera?
Like the S22, the S23 has a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. Proper upgrades are only available for the S23 Ultra, which has a 200-megapixel main camera installed. After all, Samsung was generous with the front camera of the S23 and has increased the ten megapixels of the S22 to twelve megapixels. Otherwise, you can look forward to high-resolution 8K videos at up to 30 frames per second, better optical image stabilization and faster autofocus. And night shots should also be much better with the new generation – especially with the S23 Ultra.
In addition to these hardware adjustments, Samsung has of course also tweaked the software of the new generation, which also brings some improvements and ensures more successful recordings. The biggest differences between the two generations are once more only in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The other models hardly differ from each other in terms of their camera for most users.

Performance and battery life of the Galaxy S23 and S22
As is well known, Samsung has historically used different chips for different markets. For example, the 22 generation in the USA is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while the slightly weaker Exynos chip is used in Europe. This is finally over! The Galaxy S23 generation comes with the same chip everywhere: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. In comparison, the Qualcomm chips convince with better performance and energy efficiency.
On the memory front, the S23, like the S22, comes with the memory options of 128, 256 and 512 gigabytes. The main memory is once more eight gigabytes. However, the S23 Plus and the S23 Ultra are not available with 128 gigabytes, but you can also get the Ultra model with a terabyte of storage space and twelve gigabytes of RAM.
And following the battery of the S22 models was a disappointment for many Samsung fans, there is now reason to be happy once more. The three smartphones of the new S23 generation have once more been equipped with more powerful batteries:
- Samsung Galaxy S23: 3900 instead of 3700 milliamp hours
- Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: 4700 instead of 4500 milliamp hours
- Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: 5000 milliampere hours
In addition to the battery capacity, the runtime has also been improved by up to 20 percent – thanks to the more energy-efficient chip and other power-saving adjustments.

Additional functions of the two mobile phones
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was the first smartphone in the range to be compatible with the S Pen. This is continued with the S23 – but once more only with the Ultra. Apart from that, all the new smartphones come with the new Samsung One Ui 5.1 user interface. Although this hardly offers any changes or innovations for owners of the S22 series, it does bring some functional improvements, such as optimized connectivity with other Samsung devices.
Conclusion for comparison: For whom is the upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S23 worthwhile?
As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is one of the best smartphones on the market – of course, the Ultra model in particular stands out once more. The purchase is therefore definitely worthwhile (even if the mobile phone is not cheap with a price of at least 949.00 euros). However, the differences to the Samsung Galaxy S22 are small. Our comparison showed that. Sure, there are interesting changes and new features like ‘Nightography’ for low-light photography. But if you are already using the S22 generation, you can probably save yourself the upgrade. Better to wait another year for the next S Galaxy instead. Then the innovations will be much more noticeable. However, we can unreservedly recommend the new mobile phone to users of an older generation!
