In celebration of Mother’s Day, five Samsung executives working in Latin America report on their journeys at the multinational and how they reconcile career and motherhood. Milene Gomes, director of Trade and Visual Merchandising for the Consumer Electronics division at Samsung Brazil; Vanessa Coutinho, senior director of Sales for the Mobile Experience area at Samsung Brazil; Adriana Mori, Director of Legal & Compliance at Samsung and leader and founder of the Women’s at Samsung Committee at Samsung Brazil; Lizeth Cárdenas, Furniture Supply Chain Manager at Samsung Peru; and Victoria Casasola, Marketing Manager for Samsung Central America and the Caribbean, share their perspectives, challenges and lessons learned.

Balance with support from inside and outside the company

Victoria Casasola recognizes that motherhood is a unique experience and involves many responsibilities that are often difficult to reconcile with a busy professional life. However, she reveals that she always found support for her growth and maturity within the company, which was fundamental in her career.

“It’s valuable that a company as big as Samsung has believed and trusted me. It has allowed me to develop my career and grow as a person. I was able to transmit this to my children and guide them in their formation as people of integrity, ”she reveals.

Mother of two girls, Lizeth Cárdenas is straightforward regarding her goals as both a leader and a mother. “I believe that everyone has talent. My main goal is to find and develop these talents in my daughters. On the other hand, in the professional field, I intend to continue building high-performance teams and never stop learning. ”

To complete, she reveals that it is possible to assume both roles (mother and professional) and be successful. “Women should not choose between one option or another, they can grow professionally and be great mothers. I want to teach my daughters to chase their dreams and never stop believing in themselves,” she says.

Vanessa Coutinho, Senior Director of Sales for the Mobile Experience area at Samsung Brazil

For Vanessa Coutinho, most mothers face very similar dilemmas in their journeys: the responsibility of performing both roles satisfactorily. However, she reveals that she has found a support network in and out of work.

“The important thing is, within the routine, to have the confidence and tranquility of knowing who to count on when necessary. Likewise, creating bonds of trust within the company, with your manager, your colleagues and peers is essential to keep the work going smoothly, even when it is not possible to be present”, says Vanessa.

She adds that the hybrid work model, offered by Samsung, is a great benefit for reconciling all tasks. “This resource is increasingly widespread, mature and plays a fundamental role in this relationship between career and motherhood, making presence and performance possible in both environments and also minimizing the feeling of guilt”.

Adriana Mori, Director of Legal & Compliance at Samsung Brazil

Also the mother of two daughters, Adriana Mori recognizes that reconciling work and career is not easy, but it is possible, especially when situations can be negotiated. “Many women still believe that motherhood and a career do not go together and that, therefore, there is only one path to be chosen. I’ve always thought a lot regarding questions like this and I confess that I didn’t think I was the best person to answer, ”she says. Today, the director of the Legal & Compliance area at Samsung Brasil feels safe to say that, despite being laborious, the task is not impossible. “After I became a mother, I became a much more objective, organized and productive professional. I believe that today, with more open discussions on the subject and with the possibility of hybrid work, this task can be more relaxed”, adds the director.

Adriana is also the founder and leader of the Women at Samsung multidisciplinary committee, whose objective is to encourage diversity and inclusion, strengthen female leadership and improve the work environment.

Milene Gomes, Director of Trade and Visual Merchandising for the Consumer Electronics Division at Samsung Brazil

Milene Gomes reveals that following becoming a mother, she saw the need to plan to find the balance between motherhood and career.

“Knowing how to organize tasks, prioritize deliveries and be attentive to situations – at home and at work – makes all the difference. Incredibly, when I became a mother, I became even more organized, as it is something that requires punctuality, precision and, above all, acceptance”, she completes.
