Samsung has announced that it is starting mass production of two new QD-OLED panels dedicated to PC monitors. The first displays an Ultra HD definition for a diagonal of 31.5 inches, compared to 27 inches in QHD for the second… which can however go up to 360 Hz. This novelty should lead QD-OLED technology to find a more prominent place. important in the market.

Did you like the QD-OLED technology on the Alienware AW3423DW, on some Samsung monitors and on the TV market? You will then be satisfied to learn that Samsung Display has the firm intention of continuing its momentum by expanding its offering in this area. The Samsung Electronics subsidiary dedicated to the development and production of screens, announcement begin mass production of two new models of QD-OLED panels.

The first has an Ultra HD definition (3840 x 2160 pixels) for a diagonal of 31.5 inches; while the second is limited to a QHD definition in 27 inches, but can in return go up to a maximum of 360 Hz. Samsung also explains that this second panel, especially dedicated to gaming monitors, is the first on the market to combine the QD-OLED technology at such a refresh rate. This panel will also benefit from a minimal response time, measured at 0.3 ms.

As a reminder, QD-OLED technology concentrates all the advantages of Oled, such as its bright colors and deep blacks, while adding a filter regulating its main fault, namely its lack of brightness.

New panels designed to equip the star monitors of 2024

To develop its 31.5-inch QD-OLED Ultra HD panel, Samsung explains that it used a technologyultra-precise inkjet printing with quantum dot (QD) electroluminescent layer“. In its press release, Samsung Display adds that it “optimized inkjet nozzle and spray volume» to achieve an increase in the pixel density of this screen to 140 PPI, as much as a 65-inch 8K television, we read.

That being said, and if this pixel density is indeed satisfactory, the comparison is a little misleading since a PC monitor is used much closer than a TV screen. It therefore requires a higher pixel density to ensure good display finesse. This is also what Samsung admits a little later in its press release.

For the rest, the firm indicates that these two new QD-OLED panels will equip part of the premium monitors expected in 2024 from its partners. It is also a safe bet that with these two new options, the market for QD-OLED monitors will become more attractive and more important next year. We will probably have the opportunity to measure this during CES in early January.

For Samsung Display, the challenge is in any case to carve out a nice share of the pie: the delivery of OLED panels in the broad sense has made it possible to boost growth in the field of premium PC monitors. We learn that 600,000 OLED PC screens were delivered in 2023, four times more than in 2022.
