The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) will hold an extraordinary general meeting tomorrow to deal with the agenda to change the name of the organization to the Korea Economic Association.
The Korea Economic Cooperation is the name of an economic organization established in 1961 as the predecessor of the Federation of Korean Industries, and was renamed to the Federation of Korean Industries in 1968.
The Federation of Korean Industries explained, “It reflects our will to go back to the beginning and put the country and people first into practice.”
At this general meeting, the procedure for appointing Ryu Jin, chairman of Poongsan Group, as the chairman of Korea Economic Cooperation will also be held.
Previously, the Federation of Korean Industries served as a communication channel between the government and the business community.
However, at the time of the Park Geun-hye government’s manipulation of state affairs, it was also pointed out as a link in the collusion between politics and business by leading the fundraising of the Mir and K-Sports foundations, which were moneybags of the Choi Soon-sil family.
Because of this, the four major groups, Samsung and Hyundai Motors, and SK and LG, left the FKI one following another.
The FKI’s status plummeted as the companies that provided the most donations withdrew.
In response, the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) formed the Ethical Management Committee in May and announced an innovation plan that included changes to its identity as a think tank-type economic organization.
However, it is unclear whether the FKI’s self-rescue measures will be effective.
This is because there is a lack of social consensus, and the embers of collusion between politics and business still linger when looking at the human composition.
Kim Byung-joon, acting chairman of the FKI, served as the head of the election countermeasures committee during President Yoon Seok-yeol’s presidential campaign, and is expected to change his position to the Korea Economic Cooperation Advisory Board soon.
For this reason, the Federation of Economic Affairs criticizes the movement of the FKI to change its name and make a comeback as ″resumption of collusion between politics and business.″
Meanwhile, five affiliates of Samsung, including Samsung Electronics, which were actually allowed to rejoin the FKI by the Samsung Compliance Committee, plan to hold a board meeting today to discuss the final discussion on joining the FKI.
