Confirming the statements released at the latest edition of CESSamsung has announced seven years of free updates for smart TVs with the Tizen operating system, starting with the 2024 models. For many years, the main TV manufacturers implemented the latest version of their operating system only in new models. In some cases, TVs from previous years are updated with specific functions, or to fix bugs, but the operating system remains the one installed when they were released on the market. The Android TV / Google TV, Roku and Fire TV platforms are exceptions to this policy, although sometimes without specific rules and timing. At the end of 2023, however, LG finally announced five years of free webOS updates for 2024 modelslater confirming it also for several of 2023 and 2022. Panasonic for its part has abandoned the myHomeScreen platform, replacing it in most new models with Fire TV.

Market leader Samsung was thus the only major TV manufacturer that did not allow operating system updates. Fortunately, as reported by The Korea Economic Daily e Business Koreathat’s finally about to change, as it too has formally committed to updating its Tizen OS TVs. In addition to the 2024 models, some 2023 models will also receive it for free. While there are no further details, this will likely translate into six OS updates over a seven-year period, similarly to the four updates in five years guaranteed by LG for its TVs with webOS. For example, LG models from 2024 will receive webOS 25 in 2026 and will be updated until 2029, when it will be the turn of webOS 28. As usual, the next version of Tizen should be presented at CES 2025 next January. Of course, as explicitly stated by LG, it should be noted that some functions may not be supported on older products, even after the operating system update. In fact, some of them may require specific hardware features, the absence of which makes implementation impossible.
