Following theBerlin at IFA 2022 where this theme was on the lips of almost all manufacturers, Samsung confirms what it has begun to reveal on its stand. The Korean giant is aiming for nothing less than reducing the company’s CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050 and for the DX division by 2030. What to think?
Samsung Electronics unveiled in mid-September on its new global environmental strategy. The company defines the terms of its participation in the global effort to combat climate change. At the heart of this new strategy: the company’s commitment to reduce its CO2 emissions to zero, according to a communiqué broadcast on Friday.
First course in 2030?
This strategy includes a commitment to achieve net zero emissions company-wide, to use more renewable energy and to invest in new technologies and research, in order to develop energy-efficient products. Added to this is the optimization of water use and the development of new CO2 capture and recovery technologies.
The Device eXperience (DX) business unit is expected to achieve zero emissions by 2030, and all international businesses, including the Device Solutions (DS) business unit, by 2050. The Device eXperience business unit brings together Consumer Electronics, including Mobile eXperience, Visual Display, Digital Appliances, Networks and Health & Medical Equipment. The DS division includes the Memory, System LSI and Foundry units.
What do you think of all this?
Samsung has also just joined the global RE100 initiative, in favor of 100% renewable energy. Under this commitment, the powerful technology group plans to cover its electricity needs in all marketing areas outside Korea using renewable energy within five years.
My comment? Difficult to judge without knowing the details of all the efforts undertaken. Either way, you see all these giants trying to put in the effort, which is a positive thing. The real problem, however, lies in the finiteness of planetary resources. The real challenge is to be able to continue all these activities by lowering the pressure on the Earth, which seems far from obvious… All these efforts, obviously commendable, are probably to be put into perspective…
