Chinese golfer Sampson Zheng took the top spot on the second day of the 2024 Indonesia Open, after he recorded 63 strokes or 8 under par at Damai Indah Golf Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, Friday (30/8).
Zheng now has a total of 128 strokes or 14 under par to sit at the top of the leaderboard. He is four strokes ahead of the first day’s leader, Aaron Wilkin, who dropped to second place with a total of 132 strokes or 10 under par.
“I played well today. I kept my driver in the fairway throughout the second round. I don’t think I missed any fairways, which was good. I also managed to hit my wedges close to the hole so I made a lot of putts from an average of about 2.7 meters. So there wasn’t a single miss. It was a good day,” Zheng said as quoted by Between.
Wilkin, who led and set a course record on the first day, failed to maintain the consistency of his game. He could only play par on the second day. The Australian golfer who teed off on hole one immediately made bogeys on the first two holes. The other two bogeys were made on holes 9 and 12.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t feel like I did this morning. I tried to control my nerves a little bit. Started off bogey, bogey. But I calmed down in the middle. I played really well on the back nine, even though the wind was blowing. I hit a lot of good shots, just couldn’t finish the putts. I probably could have done more, but that’s the way it is,” Wilkin said.
The 33-year-old golfer scored three consecutive birdies on holes 5, 6, and 6. The last birdie was scored on hole 10. The T3 position was occupied by Sarit Suwannarut, Liu Yanwei, Steve Lewton, and Ervin Chang. Each player collected 134 strokes or 8 under par.
Meanwhile the T7 position with a total record of 135 strokes or 7 under par is occupied by six golfers, namely Poosit Supupramai, Douglas Klein, Andrew Dodt, Charng-Tai Sudsom, Ho Yu-Cheng, Phachara Khongwatmai.
Indonesia Open 2024 still has two days of matches left, and the winner will be determined on Sunday (31/8). (Z-6)
