According to recent news, Samourai Wallet, the open-source bitcoin private wallet, is working on a development that would further improve data protection and anonymity features by introducing atomic swaps between Bitcoin and Monero. Atomic swap is a p2p transaction that allows you to exchange tokens between two blockchains without an intermediary. However, this is not as positive news for the community as we might think. Samourai Wallet’s new feature is not good news for many The story began on August 4th, when a Samourai Wallet developer shared a screenshot of a piece of code. In principle, this would be an automatic transaction, a swap between BTC and XMR. It is not yet known exactly where this action would be placed in the code, but the screenshot alone was enough to get the community fired up. Some people welcomed the news of the new privacy feature, but for example, a Twitter user named PlateLicker called on his 11,000 followers to boycott the Samourai Wallet. Then, on the fifth of August, a post from Samourai Wallet’s official X account (or ex-Twitter account) added to the mood. They wrote that the atomic swap between BTC and XMR is “already here and they have been working very hard on it”. And if someone doesn’t like it, they don’t have to use the Samourai Wallet, they wrote in the post. The main problem, according to many, is that the wallet has positioned itself as a Bitcoin-only wallet for years. The X-account of the ministry responded to this and wrote that this will not change, they will only continue to improve data protection. Some welcomed the possibility of the new feature, considering that it would provide even more freedom. With the help of atomic swap, there is no middleman anymore, we put the BTC in a multisig wallet, and the other party can only take it out if they put Monero in it. Bitcoin maximalists were therefore quite divided by the current news, but in the end Samourai Wallet is right. If you don’t like Monerós’ atomic swap function, don’t use the wallet.
