In Ghent, Sammeke is a blessing for the local police who even gave him this little nickname, but represents a curse for some motorists. The story is brought to us by our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws. The mobile flash box travels through the city, from street to street, to check that motorists respect the speed. But this month, Sammeke will not be in the streets of Ghent as usual but at the repair shop instead.

During transport a few weeks ago, the radar was damaged and can temporarily no longer be used. “During transport, something came loose and the radar was damaged,” said police spokesman Matto Langeraert.
The damage to the radar is being investigated by experts. It is not yet clear how long “Sammeke” will remain out of service. But we should not believe that there will be no more radars during this time. “The other lightning actions will of course continue to take place normally,” explains Langeraert.

The radar was put into operation in 2015. The name refers to SAM laser technology, so the cameras are not hindered by reflections from metal, such as those from cars or trams. By 2023, the device had already captured 6,136 speeding drivers on screen.
