Crete, as well as all of Greece, is shocked by the fatal injury of a tourist from a rock fall in the Samaria gorge.
The unfortunate tourist from Germany was killed after a rock fall caused by the heavy downpour that broke out after 1.30pm.
In fact, it seems that the specific downpour was not predicted by the meteorologists nor was there any relevant information. The incident took place at the narrow point, in the gorge, specifically at Portes, reports the website cretalive.gr.
The rock was detached from its position and fell on a tree and a piece of it fell on the thigh of the 35-year-old woman, who breathed her last from uncontrollable bleeding.
In fact, a tourist doctor, also a hiker, was found at the scene of the accident, who rushed to give her first aid, to no avail.
EMAK and EMODE forces rushed to the scene, in order to transport the 35-year-old woman as well as 32 others who were hiking in the gorge to avoid being trapped. Most of the trapped people went out to Agia Roumeli with the aim of transporting them to Sfakia by boat.
“The trapped people have left the scene. There are some who are in the settlement of Samaria for safety because they are elderly, but they are not considered trapped”, said the manager of the Forest’s workers, Alkiviadis Pentarakis, in his statements to MEGA.
