Sam Welsford ‘grids’ Jakobsen and Bennett on the line and takes the 6th stage of the Tour of San Juan

The Australian Sam Welsford (DSM) won the sixth stage of the Tour de San Juan, whose arrival was judged in front of the Velodrome Vicente Chancay. The 27-year-old sprinter grilled politeness at Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-Quick Step) et Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the last 50 meters. Miguel Angel Lopez (Team Medellin EPM) conserve le maillot de leader.

Multiple world champion on the track and latecomer to the road, Welsford won his second success among the professionals. He won the Tour of Turkey last year. He also finished 3rd in the Scheldt Grand Prix and 4th in the Bredene Classic. Well protected by his teammates and more “patient” than his rivals, he came out of the box at the very last moment. In the long 5 kilometer straight, it was obviously the right tactic.

The breakaway of seven riders never really believed in its chances. The group, reduced to five units, still resisted the peloton in an ultra-fast stage. It is made up of Argentines Maximilian et Mauro Abel Richeze, Gerardo Matias Tivani, Emiliano Ibarra and the Italian Philip Magli. Despite their efforts, they were caught regarding ten kilometers from the line.

In the last three kilometers, Remco Evenepoel positioned himself in the lead and pressed on the pedals to stretch the peloton. Subsequent stages of the Wolfpack rocket misfired. They were overwhelmed by the Bora-Hansgrohes and then the DSMs.

The leader’s jersey is still well hung on the shoulders of Lopez. The only notable change in the general classification is the disappearance ofEgan Bernal. Fourth this Saturday morning, the Colombian gave up at the start of the stage. The Ineos climber has suffered from his knee since his fall in the first stage. As a result, Remco Evenepoel climbs to 7th place.
