Australia: Sam died of cancer 1.5 years ago – now he’s going to be a dad
Charlotte and Sam Eiler really wanted to become parents when he suddenly became ill with cancer.
He died a year and a half ago – but he left his frozen sperm behind.

Charlotte and Sam Eiler met at a housewarming party in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2015. “He was an absolutely incredible man who took everyone by storm. When he came into a room you had no choice but to love him,” Charlotte told Swedish TV4. Three years ago, the young couple suffered a terrible blow when Sam was diagnosed with cancer.
The couple eventually moved to Australia, where Sam was born, so he might be close to his family. “We kept saying to each other: ‘Together we can do everything!’” Their greatest wish was to raise children together.
Sperm frozen
Sam had his sperm frozen to protect them from chemotherapy. The cells were to be saved while waiting for Sam to recover from the serious illness.
Charlotte says it gave them both strength to talk regarding future children during cancer treatment. “We chose names and talked regarding how we wanted to raise them.” But things turned out differently: Sam dies in April 2022. It made sense for Charlotte to then be artificially inseminated with her late husband’s sperm. She has received incredible support from family and friends.
Nevertheless, the pregnancy without Sam was anything but easy. “It’s an emptiness that you can’t describe, it was a challenge for me.” In three weeks she will be able to hold their baby in her arms. “I feel like I’m living for both of us now, we’ve led an adventurous life and I want to give our child a similar life” – and she adds: “I want him to be a sibling, I have the opportunity .»
