Salzburg’s record goal: A crazy hit that was actually irregular

The Bulls have redefined the term “lightning start” in the Hofmann-Personal Stadium: Salzburg’s Petar Ratkov set a new record for the fastest goal in an Austrian Bundesliga game with his goal – and thus replaced a former Salzburg kicker: Der Czech Patrik Jezek scored after ten seconds in the duel between Salzburg and Altach in July 2007.

The home team had played their kick-off backwards, BW goalie Nicolas Schmid was supposed to immediately hit the ball to the top. However, the goalkeeper was surprised by the Serbian striker, who blocked the shot – the ball landed in the goal.Bitter: Before Linz had kicked off, Ratkov was already in the opponent’s half.

However, the referee team around Alan Kijas did not recognize the violation of the rules, and at the same time the VAR was not allowed to correct it. The background: In controversial situations, the video referee should always only trace the respective action back to the relevant ball capture. Seen in this way, Ratkov’s early start played no role for the VAR, as the ball was only captured at the time when Schmid Ratkov shot. In addition, there is no provision for intervention in a kick-off situation in the VAR protocol. It remained the goal for the history books – even if it shouldn’t have counted.
