Ice hockey champions Salzburg’s early winning streak was broken in Innsbruck. The Tyrolean “Sharks” inflicted their first defeat on the previously unbeaten Salzburg team with a 2-1 win following extra time on Tuesday in the 5th round of the ICE League. The new frontrunner is HC Pustertal, the only team still undefeated. The Bruneck team defeated the KAC 5:3.

VSV, which celebrated a 2-1 home win following a penalty shootout once morest league bottom team Asiago, is now tied with Salzburg in third place. The Vienna Capitals took their third win in the fourth game once morest the Pioneers Vorarlberg with a score of 6:4. The Graz99ers, however, only have two points following four games and a 1:6 defeat in Fehervar. The fourth-placed Hungarians scored four times in the final third.

Innsbruck’s Brady Shaw scored what seemed to be the decisive goal in the power play in the 12th minute. As the final minute approached, Salzburg defender Chay Genoway made it 1-1 and thus botched the first shutout by the busy Evan Buitenhuis (parried 45 shots) in the Innsbruck goal. With 40 seconds left in overtime, Corey Mackin struck.

Villach were also just a few seconds away from a lackluster home win once morest Asiago following regular time and thus three points instead of two. After John Hughes made it 1-0 (48th), Alexander Ierullo punished the “Eagle” with a shorthanded goal (59th). In the penalty shootout, former Asiago striker Anthony Luciano scored the decisive attempt.

The victorious return of Caps coach Marc Habscheid to his previous position was an emotional rollercoaster ride. The Viennese turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead by the middle of the final third, but gave it away with a double strike (Steven Owre 51st, 54th). The fact that the game ended with an away win was also due to Lukas Kainz, who set up Oscar Drugge’s 5:4 with his third point of the evening. Owre and Clayton Kirichenko (one goal, three assists) were noticeable for the home team.

The KAC was behind most of the time once morest Pustertal. After a 0-2 defeat, Klagenfurt, who were once once more without regular goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm, came back with goals from Jan Mursak and Lukas Haudum in the power play. After the South Tyroleans increased the score to 4:2, the comeback was no longer successful. The final phase was still exciting because Alex Petan deflected a cross pass from Manuel Ganahl into his own goal to make it 3-4 (50′). Daniel Catenacci scored into the empty KAC goal (60th).
