Linda Hehenwarter missed out on the title spot she had hoped for at the European Youth Championships after a strong performance in the semi-finals, but she achieved an important goal.

Tennengau triathlete Linda Hehenwarter finished 21st at the European Junior Championships in Balikesir (Turkey) on Friday. She was the second-best Austrian player, behind Tabea Huys from Tyrol, who was seventh. Coach Anton Kesselbacher also expects the 19-year-old from Puch to finish in the top ten. She failed to do that in Saturday’s A final. The day before, she qualified as top athlete with her fifth-fastest time overall.

“So our expectations were a little higher. But the performance did not disappoint. Friday’s performance was especially good,” Kesselbach said. In both events, Hehenwarter, who fell at last year’s European Championships in Balikesir, was unable to exploit her swimming strengths as she had hoped. In Saturday’s final, she missed a set and was left behind. Still, it was clear: Hehenwarter qualified for the Junior World Championships in Spain in October by finishing 21st. “It’s a big goal,” said coach Kesselbach, who is also planning Heinwatt’s first appearance in the elite Continental Cup.
