Salzburg overcame the blue-white curse and celebrated a 5-1 win

A Salzburg team in high spirits has also won the second game of the new Bundesliga season. In the first home game on Saturday, Pepijn Lijnders’ team beat Blau-Weiß Linz 5-1 (2-1), thus celebrating a successful dress rehearsal for Tuesday’s return match in the Champions League qualifiers against Twente Enschede. Man of the evening was Oscar Gloukh, who turned the game around after an early 0-1 deficit with three goals (15th, 34th, 62nd).

Blau-Weiß, a kind of “bogey team” of the favorites with a 1-0 win and a 1-1 draw last season, took the lead through Conor Noß (12th), but ultimately could do little to counter Salzburg’s unleashed offensive power. In the finish, starting eleven debutant Moussa Yeo (73rd) and Mads Bidstrup (77th) made the landslide victory perfect. After the 1-0 opening victory over Austria Vienna, Blau-Weiß suffered its first defeat.

Lijnders rested six regular players

Lijnders wanted “new energy sources” for the duel with the underdog. Half a dozen players were given the chance, and 18-year-old Bundesliga debutant John Mellberg was a real surprise as a left full-back.

As planned, Salzburg had more of the game in a fast-paced encounter and also had a few half-chances, but after twelve minutes they were reminded of the previous season. Noß took a high ball and shot at goal, got the better of Samson Baidoo and finished well into the far corner.

But Salzburg didn’t allow any doubts to arise and continued to attack. Three minutes later, Gloukh equalized to 1:1 with a dry low shot into the far corner from a good twelve meters after good preparatory work by Dedic. Less than 20 minutes later and a lot of pressure from Salzburg without any concrete chances, the Israeli had finally turned the result around. In combination with Petar Ratkov, he combined through the middle and didn’t give goalie Nicolas Schmid a chance.

The home team continued to put pressure on the now busy Linz team at high speed. They were lucky not to concede any more goals. Gloukh was stopped by Schmid (38th minute), Yeo narrowly missed the far corner (39th minute), and a penalty could have been awarded after a foul on Adam Daghim. Defensively, the Bullen eleven, which had advanced far, were vulnerable at times, and the supposed 2-1 goal by Noß turned out to be a narrow offside (20th minute).

Salzburg continued seamlessly after the restart, and now Linz’s pinpricks were completely absent. Schmid had to intervene against Yeo (48th minute), a slightly deflected Ratkov shot went just wide (53rd minute). It was only a matter of time before the ball rang again. Finally, Gloukh completed one of the numerous penalty area combinations to make it 3-1. Substitute Dorgeles Nene later rattled the side netting (67th minute) and was stopped by Schmid with a curling shot (69th minute), but Yeo’s shot was then unstoppable. In the final phase, “joker” Bidstrup was also able to celebrate after a precisely timed through pass from Maurits Kjaergaard.
