Red Bull Salzburg’s managing director Stephan Reiter has been elected to the board of the powerful European Club Association (ECA). The top functionary of Austria’s soccer series champions was elected to the board at the ECA General Assembly in Berlin on Thursday. Reiter has been with the ECA since 2020. As a representative of subdivision 2 of the clubs in places seven to 15 in the national ranking, he has now been chosen by them for the highest committee.
“The ECA now represents almost 400 clubs and has also opened up a bit to the smaller leagues in recent years. Together with UEFA we want to continue to push the development of European football,” said Reiter. For Austria’s Bundesliga, his election to the board was associated with a certain recognition. In addition to Salzburg, Sturm Graz, WAC, LASK and SKN St. Pölten (women) are also represented in the ECA as full members with voting rights. Rapid and Austria are associated members.
Founded in 2008, the ECA is the only club organization recognized by UEFA and is chaired by Qatari Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of Paris Saint-Germain. The association has developed into a powerful association in recent years. With UEFA, the formation of a Super League was prevented in 2021. The clubs pushed ahead with the reform of the Champions League with more games and even higher billions in sales from the 2024/25 season.
