Red Bull Salzburg were not rewarded for their courageous performance in the second away game of this Champions League season. Austria’s football champions were defeated by Inter in Milan 1:2 (0:1) on Tuesday. A somewhat controversial penalty, which Hakan Calhanoglu safely converted (64th), gave last season’s finalists three points and continued lead in Group D.
After a strong start from Salzburg, Alexis Sanchez put the big favorites in the lead in front of 71,825 spectators at San Siro (19th). Oscar Gloukh equalized following a nice move (57′), but it didn’t last long. After an attack by Lucas Gourna-Douath on Davide Frattesi, referee Francois Letexier awarded a penalty, which brought the decision. Shortly before the break, Salzburg had asked for a penalty in vain. The “Bulls” go into the second leg on November 8th in Salzburg as third in the group.
Coach Gerhard Struber made five changes to his team compared to the 0-1 defeat once morest LASK. Defense chief Strahinja Pavlovic, recently suspended nationally, was available, the experienced left-back Andreas Ulmer made his season debut in the premier class in place of the injured Aleksa Terzic, and the strong running Mads Bidstrup returned in midfield. Struber also changed the system. He condensed the midfield and offered Roko Simic as a solo striker, meaning Karim Konate lost his place in the starting line-up.
With new personnel and different tactics, Salzburg also showed a different face on the field. As announced, they started very courageously with high pressing and immediately created their first chance to score. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer parried Gloukh’s shot (4th).
Apart from two free kicks, Inter only got into Salzburg’s penalty area in the 19th minute – and took the lead. The ball came fortunately because it was deflected to Alexis Sanchez, who gave goalkeeper Alexander Schlager no chance. The Chilean veteran was unexpectedly called up alongside world champion Lautaro Martinez instead of Marcus Thuram and also came into play because ÖFB record national player Marko Arnautovic was still missing due to a muscle injury.
With the lead behind them, last season’s finalist and current Serie A leaders then increasingly took control of Koner Serie A. Salzburg barely got into the attacking third until halftime, but shortly before the break they unsuccessfully called for a penalty following a corner.
Inter seemed to want to manage their lead, but Salzburg struck following just under an hour. The ball came to Gloukh via Simic and Maurits Kjaergaard, and the 19-year-old Israeli hit it just as perfectly as Sanchez had before. But the Italians quickly took the lead once more because Calhanoglu sent shots from the penalty spot into the other corner.
Salzburg tried hard in the finish, but Inter didn’t allow any good chances to equalize. On the other hand, a goal from Martinez was disallowed for offside following a VAR check (81′).
