Red Bull Salzburg were not rewarded for their courageous performance in the second away game of this Champions League season. Austria’s football champions were defeated by Inter in Milan 1:2 (0:1) on Tuesday. A somewhat controversial penalty, which Hakan Calhanoglu safely converted (64th), gave last season’s finalists three points and continued lead in Group D.
After a strong start from Salzburg, Alexis Sanchez put the big favorites in the lead in front of 71,825 spectators at San Siro (19th). Oscar Gloukh equalized following a nice move (57′), but it didn’t last long. But the Italians quickly took the lead once more because Calhanoglu sent shots from the penalty spot into the other corner.
Salzburg tried hard in the finish, but Inter didn’t allow any good chances to equalize. On the other hand, a goal from Martinez was disallowed for offside following a VAR check (81′).
