After a 2-0 win in the first leg, the Austrian football runners-up were satisfied with a 1-1 (1-1) draw against Dynamo Kiev in the return match in Wals-Siezenheim on Tuesday. For the first time in history, two Austrian clubs have qualified for the main competition of the premier class, after Sturm Graz secured its ticket for the new league phase after winning the championship title.
Adam Daghim put the “Bulls” in the lead in the 12th minute in his first start in the Champions League qualifiers, Wladyslaw Wanat (29th) managed to equalize for the guests in the first half. In the second 45 minutes, the pressure from the Ukrainians increased, but Salzburg did not concede another goal, thanks in part to a bit of luck.

Salzburg played in their light beige international jerseys for this season, and coach Pepijn Lijnders made three changes to the first leg: Ignace van der Brempt replaced the injured Aleksa Terzic, but moved to the right side of defence. Regular right-back Amar Dedic took Terzic’s position at left back. Nicolas Capaldo played in midfield for Lucas Gourna-Douath, and Daghim replaced Nene on the right wing. The two regular players had been ill in recent days and started on the bench.

The first ten minutes clearly belonged to the Ukrainian runners-up, who played forward with increased urgency and proved immune to Salzburg’s pressing. Wladyslaw Dubintschak was well positioned and missed the goal in the 5th minute. Nevertheless, the Austrians took the lead with their first notable offensive action: Maurits Kjaergaard found Daghim on the right, who moved inside, easily shook off Dubintschak and shot with his left from the edge of the penalty area. Dedic (15th), Oscar Gloukh (16th) and Moussa Yeo (18th/25th) then missed great opportunities to score a second goal against the sloppy defending opponent.

This was to come back to haunt him, as Wanat won a decisive duel with Samson Baidoo shortly afterwards and scored cleanly to make it 1:1. This goal also came out of the blue. Mads Bidstrup prevented Wladyslaw Kabajew from scoring in the 36th minute at the last minute after he had apparently already been left behind in a running duel. The Dane celebrated his strong move in front of the Salzburg supporters. But it became clear that Dynamo – apart from the state of shock after conceding the goal – found plenty of space between the defensive lines of Lijnders’ team time and time again.
Even after the break, the game went back and forth, with both teams storming forward with open visors. Gloukh (56th) lost his way while trying to outwit goalkeeper Heorhij Buschtschan on the edge of the penalty area. On the opposite side, a long-range shot from Braschko in the 68th minute whistled just over. As the game went on, the action shifted more and more to the Austrian half, and Kiev needed two more goals to at least make it to extra time. In the 81st minute, Salzburg were extremely lucky when Mykola Schaparenko shot wide of the goal from a great position. The home team then survived the five minutes of stoppage time and celebrated with their fans afterwards.
