Salzburg hit the million-dollar jackpot again

Salzburg hit the million-dollar jackpot again

Austria’s football giant qualified for the financially extremely lucrative premier class for the sixth time in a row in the play-off against Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday and can therefore plan on starting money of 18.6 million euros, just like double winners Sturm Graz. Every win in the new league phase, which comprises eight games per club, brings in 2.1 million euros, and every draw 700,000.

The final position in the Champions League table, which now includes 36 participants, offers further bonuses. Two million euros are given to clubs in places one to eight, and one million to those in places nine to 16. However, this does not exhaust the 914 million euro pot for performance-related payments (37.5 percent of the total).

A new share model is being introduced. The last-placed team will receive a share worth at least 275,000 euros. An additional share is added for each rank, so that the best-placed team will receive 36 shares. The amount per share will increase because point bonuses are saved by draws on the field and are included here.

Fictitious example: A team that finishes in 16th place with three wins from eight games will earn at least an additional 14 million euros from the performance-related bonuses. In addition, there is income from the third pillar, in addition to entry fees and performance bonuses, the new value bonus pool (sale of media rights, club coefficient), which accounts for 35 percent (853 million euros) of the total endowment.

This season, UEFA is distributing a total of 3.31 billion euros for the three European Cup competitions: Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. The lion’s share, namely 74.4 percent (2.47 billion), goes to the Champions League. 17.02 percent (565 million) goes to participants in the Europa League and 8.6 percent (285 million) to participants in the Conference League.

Since Salzburg has qualified for the first time for the Club World Cup in the USA, which will take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, millions more are guaranteed. However, there are no clear details about the entry fee for the XXL edition, which will feature 32 teams for the first time.
