A helicopter belonging to the Salzburg company Heli Austria crashed in northern Italy. The accident happened on Tuesday evening in the Valtellina valley in Lombardy, at an altitude of 1,700 meters. As the fire department confirmed to the APA, three people suffered injuries. The Swiss pilot was taken to the Bergamo hospital in critical condition.

The 62-year-old is now out of danger, but needs treatment for head injuries and fractures. According to Roy Knaus, Managing Director of Heli Austria, the Swiss is a very experienced pilot with 11,000 flight hours. The condition of the two Italian flight assistants, who were also on board the helicopter, is not worrying. They are also being treated in the hospital.

Cause of crash still unclear

The small five-person Airbus H-125 helicopter had taken off from the mountain town of Livigno on Tuesday and was heading towards Caiolo in the Lombard province of Sondrio when it crashed in the dark. The salvage work was problematic because the area is difficult to reach by land. The causes of the crash are still under investigation.
