Salvini shows his muscles (late): “The CEO of Stellantis should be ashamed, the car crisis… – Il Fatto Quotidiano

The aftermath of a heated parliamentary hearing continues to unfold. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares accused stringent environmental regulations of hindering the green transition, demanding significant government financial aid. While Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso advocated for a collaborative national strategy involving the government, opposition groups, unions, and automakers to ensure Stellantis’s continued Italian presence, Northern League leader Matteo Salvini launched a scathing rebuke. Salvini demanded Tavares take responsibility and offer a public apology to Italian workers and citizens for the decline in the nation’s automotive industry, placing some of the blame squarely on the executive’s shoulders. Salvini further criticized Urso for accepting the company’s promises without sufficient governmental pressure for tangible results.

Urso, however, countered that Tavares is not in a position to make demands given his perceived mismanagement of a historically important Italian company. Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini echoed this sentiment, calling the request for additional incentives unreasonable. Orsini emphasized the critical need for robust, responsible industrial strategies from companies committed to domestic production. This position is notable, considering Orsini’s prior support for government funding of businesses, including proposals for state-subsidized housing and tax breaks. While he supports aid for his organization’s members, he doesn’t extend the same support to Stellantis. The merger of FCA and PSA to form Stellantis occurred after FCA’s departure from Italy over a decade ago, and the employers’ association – with its inherent governmental connections – had previously pushed for state intervention in the group’s equity to offset the influence of French shareholders. Orsini did however, agree with Tavares on the core cause of the auto industry’s difficulties: “The current predicament stems from previous European Commission decisions regarding the Green Deal. The 2035 ban on combustion engines is the main problem; it should not deter domestic manufacturing,” he stated.

Following Tavares’s appearance, labor unions are escalating their actions, planning a nationwide automotive strike and a Rome demonstration on October 18th, organized by Fim, Fiom, and Uim. These three labor organizations declined a meeting with Tavares, who instead met with Fismic, Ugl, and Cadre Associations. During this meeting, the Stellantis CEO mentioned advancing the production schedule for the hybrid 500 in Mirafiori to late 2025, rather than 2026.
