Last Monday (18), Salvador City Hall delivered the largest charging terminal for electric buses in the country with the capacity to charge 20 vehicles simultaneously. The space is located next to the BRT Bus Station and was created for the exclusive use of electric buses in the mode with a focus on sustainability.
According to information from Mayor Bruno Reis (União Brasil), the terminal included an investment of approximately R$4 million by the city, delivering 10 charging stations with the capacity to serve two buses each. The points, which can reach a power of 160 kW/h, complete the complete refueling of a vehicle in up to two hours.
The structure was built from a partnership signed between the city hall of the capital of Bahia and the private company Nansen, a specialist in the development of areas for electric mobility. The project must allow vehicles to carry out so-called “opportunity charges”, which consists of powering the battery while the EV is not in use.
The strategic position of the terminal means that buses can be recharged without having to return to the depot, a location that is far from the route of most lines. With this, vehicles can carry out quick refueling during the morning and followingnoon inter-peak periods, returning to operation with 100% of their batteries recharged.
The City Council claims to be studying the possibility of building a second electrical terminal in the Estação da Lapa region, progressively expanding the number of electric charging stations in the municipality.
“Only technology, innovation and electric buses will allow public transport on wheels to survive in the future. And we are sparing no effort to do this here in Salvador. Precisely because this is removing one of the components that weigh most heavily on the cost of the system, which is diesel. Studies show that it, alone, represents 26% of all costs”, said Reis.
