Salt Lake City is already ready to rekindle the torch of the Games, 21 years following hosting the 2002 edition.

This message – repeatedly hammered home in recent years by those behind the American Olympic and Paralympic bid – took on a new dimension at the end of last week.

Fact, two days following the announcement of Salt Lake City’s entry into the targeted dialogue phase, Wednesday November 29, 2023a certain crowd was noted on the square in front of the Rice-Eccles Stadium due to the holding of a ceremony to relight the Games cauldron.

A l’invitation of application and local authoritiesseveral hundred residents flocked to the site, Friday, December 1 in the early evening, in the presence of the Mayor of Salt Lake City, Erin Mendenhall, the Governor of the State of Utah, Spencer Cox, the Director General of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), Sara Hirshland, as well as representatives of the SLC-Utah Bid Committee, including Director General, Fraser Bullock, as well as a number of athletes.

Before this moment of conviviality, the Candidature Committee met to officially ratify the passage to the new selection stage set by the IOC.

Thus, by accepting the latter’s invitation to join the targeted dialogue as the one and only candidacy for 2034, Salt Lake City has clearly indicated its intention to host the Winter Games.

There was little doubt regarding it, as the candidacy was able to express its determination over the months, collecting popular support at its zenith et capital institutional supportof from the local level to the federal sphereswith the encouragement of the President of the United States himself, Joe Biden.

As Governor Spencer Cox explained on his social networks:

I am delighted to see the Olympic flame return to the cauldron at Rice-Eccles Stadium this evening!

We have worked hard over the past decade to bring the Winter Games back to Utah, and we are thrilled to see this cooperative effort come to fruition.

Thank you to Salt Lake City, our partners, our athletes, and all Utahns for embracing the Olympic spirit.

The next ten years will be an incredible decade for our state as we prepare to welcome the world in 2034!

Now, Salt Lake City – who received the congratulations of Senator and former President of the Organizing Committee of the 2002 Olympic Games, Mitt Romney – will be able to finalize its project, with an agreed deadline of February 28, 2024, then the delivery of guarantees – all already obtained – by March 31, 2024.

This will then be followed by a visit by the IOC Future Host Commission next spring, then the drafting of a report in June, before the formal designation by the IOC Session announced between July 22 and 24, 2024, i.e. shortly before the opening of the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
