New York: Salman Rushdie made his first public appearance following being hospitalized nine months ago following being stabbed. Rushdie attended the annual gala of PEN America, the literary and free expression organization of which he served as president. ‘I feel very happy.’ Rushdie said, “I have a long association with Penn America, and I’m glad to be among writers and booksellers.” Rushdie said at the gala, which was attended by hundreds of writers and other PEN members.

Among the attendees were ‘Saturday Night Live’ founder Lorne Michaels and Iranian dissident Nargus Mohammadi. Last August, Rushdie was attacked by a knife-wielding man dressed in black at the Shattucka Institution, an educational and retreat center in western New York. Rushdie was injured in the attack. He lost sight in his right eye and struggled to write.

In 1989, Rushdie was in hiding for years following Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa accusing him of blasphemy in his novel The Satanic Verses. He has since granted interviews and communicated through his Twitter account.
