Saliha Raiss has been sworn in as alderman at the municipal council of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. Her designation had been preceded by a controversy, because the MR refused to support her because of the Islamic headscarf worn by the latter in the exercise of her functions.
Saliha Raiss (Vooruit) loaned, this Wednesday, the alderman’s oath to the municipal council of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. His college application, approved by secret ballot, received the support of twenty advisers, while sixteen voted once morest. A vote was declared invalid.
Rais will replace Jef Van Damme who took on a leading role in the Flemish Community Commission.
Its designation was preceded by a controversy due to the refusal of the MRyet in the majority alongside the Socialists, to support it because of the Islamic headscarf worn by Raiss in the performance of his duties. A choice he judges incompatible with neutrality required by the exercise of an executive function.
A very large part of the opposition – Ecolo, PTB and Les Engagés – supported the alderman by agreeing to sign his application. After the vote and the swearing-in, she received expressions of support from their representatives, who all pointed the finger at the MR, and in particular its president, Georges-Louis Bouchez, accused of using Molenbeek for an electoral “positioning”.
