Sales success! PS5 made Sony become AMD’s biggest customer in 2022

According to the results, semiconductor industry analyst Sravan Kundojjala says that Sony is responsible for regarding 20% of AMD’s revenue if Xilinx figures are excluded from the total.

In the report it is said that AMD has already sold regarding US$ 3.776 billion in chips for Sony to produce units of the PlayStation 5 in 2022 alone, which represented 16% of its total revenue last year.

An excerpt from the document says:

Gaming net income of $6.8 billion in 2022 increased 21%, compared to net income of $5.6 billion in 2021. The increase in net income was driven by higher sales of semi-custom products due to to higher demand for game console SoCs, partially offset by lower sales of game graphics due to a decrease in unit shipments driven by weak consumer demand given the weakened macroeconomic conditions experienced in the second half of 2022.

According to VGChartz, it is estimated that Sony has already sold more than 31.77 million units of the PS5, while the Xbox Series X / S has sold around 20.68 million units. These numbers are certainly related to the greater availability of the PlayStation 5 in the market compared to the two Xbox versions.

In this way, most of AMD’s revenue now comes from consoles, which totaled revenue of US$6.805 million and profit of US$953 million in 2022.

Despite everything, AMD’s expectation is that sales of consoles will fall in 2023, as video game sales tend to reach their peak in the third year following launch and those responsible for them tend to renegotiate component prices following this period. .
