sales of Sony’s latest headset could be higher than the PSVR 1

Released a little over two weeks ago, the PSVR 2 generally has good feedback. Hiroki Totokifuture financial director of Sony, predicts a bright future for the latest console VR headset.

Remember, before the launch of the headset, Bloomberg had reported that Sony did not expect a huge success in terms of sales (see article), and the latter refuted the said informationFrom now on, it’s the turn of the future CFO of the firm to reveal his point of view:

We are very excited to release PSVR2 for PS5. With PlayStation VR 1 we sold over five million units, and I think we have a good chance of surpassing that with PSVR 2.

The PSVR 1 launched in the fall of 2016, and by the end of 2019, over five million units had been sold in just over three years. Recently it is Meta who mentioned the sale of 20 million helmets (see article). The VR market is still a niche today, but the impulse given by Zuckerberg and his teams in recent years might have a collateral effect on PSVR 2 sales, Sony also thanked Meta regarding this (see article).

In a few weeks, Sony might communicate the number of pre-orders and units sold. For comparison, 915,000 PlayStation VR 1 had been sold in the first 5 months following launch. The upcoming end-of-year celebrations therefore promise to be crucial for the PSVR 2, which might also benefit from an extensive game catalog as well as a possible price drop, which might compete with the release of a certain Meta Quest 3.

In all cases, good that Totoki remains cautious in his statements, the latter wants to be optimistic on the VR marketbelieving it might become one of the biggest growth areas in media and entertainment in the first half of this decade.

In many ways, this optimism, if it is confirmed as much with the teams of Sony only with sales, might do good for PlayStation VR 2 and for VR at large, with more and more games and bombasticwhich might greatly help the undecided to take the plunge into virtual reality.

The PlayStation VR 2 is already available and you can expand your toy library via gift cards PlayStation available on Amazon.fr.
