Sales of nicotine sachets to children: specialists sound the alarm

A group of health organizations is concerned regarding the legal sale to children of flavored nicotine sachets marketed by Imperial Tobacco Canada, following approval from Health Canada.

With this authorization, Imperial Tobacco Canada can also promote these products on social media or near schools, the associations warned on Tuesday.

“This is the first time in over 100 years that it is legal for a nicotine product from a tobacco company to be sold to minors in Canada,” said Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst at the Canadian Cancer Society.

Nicotine sachets take the form of sachets that you place in your mouth, where they release nicotine without tobacco. They appeared in the United States around 2016, explained the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec (INSPQ) on its website.

“By offering these products with appealing flavors like tropical breeze, fresh mint and frosted berry, all in small, colorful packages that might just as easily hold treats, it’s clear that young people will want to get them,” said he added.

Authorization was given to the company on July 18 for these products which contain nicotine, but not tobacco.

“It is absolutely incomprehensible that these flavored nicotine products can be allowed to enter the market without adequate protective regulatory measures,” said Cynthia Callard, executive director of Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada.

Specialists are therefore calling for a correction of the situation from Ottawa. They want nicotine sachets to be redefined as products requiring a prescription or to suspend their sale while the regulations are reviewed.
