Sales of consumer goods saw steady growth in China in September

BEIJING, October 25, 2023 (Xinhua) – The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said last Tuesday that merchandise sales in China grew steadily last September, as retail sales rose by 4.6 percent, an increase of 0.9 percentage points from their counterpart recorded last August.

Eco-friendly products have become popular among consumers, with data showing that sales of new energy vehicles, for example, jumped 27.7 percent last month, accounting for 31.6 percent of the country’s total new energy vehicle sales.

Thanks to the booming demand for travel, China has seen rapid growth in consumption of services this year, including restaurants, hotels, tourism and transportation, while retail sales of these services jumped by 18.9 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters of this year.

The data also showed that online retail sales maintained their rapid expansion between January and September, growing by 11.6 percent year-on-year.

Retail sales of consumer goods rose by 5.5 percent on an annual basis last September. In the first three quarters, total retail sales of consumer goods grew by 6.8 percent year-on-year. Final consumption contributed 98.4 percent to the economic growth recorded in the third quarter of this year, according to data from the National Statistics Authority.
