After the big Saint-Martin flea market last week, it’s now time for the other unmissable events of the season. This weekend, the people of Rennes were spoiled for choice with no fewer than three flea markets, organized in the Sacré-Cœur, Saint-Hélier and Landry districts. And the least we can say is that the crowds were there, everywhere!
In Saint-Hélier, along the Vilaine branch, the stands followed one another as far as the eye could see, and visitors enjoyed this rural atmosphere. Behind the station, the morning was particularly lively, much more so than the afternoon, allowing the flea market vendors, the sellers of galette-saucisses (six euros each, all the same) and the cafés to do good business. “There were people,” says a young woman from Rennes. “But I didn’t sell much.” Others were luckier. “I didn’t expect so much.”
Despite sometimes disappointing bargains, the ingenuity of the street vendors never failed to amaze. Some had planned screens to protect themselves from the rain, folding chairs to attract customers, teapots for afternoon tea and evening aperitifs. Others did the same to stand out. As always, strollers could find clothes, books and toys at unbeatable prices. We even saw a vendor bidding at one euro for crystal lamps and small Breton chests of drawers. Enough to pique the curiosity of the most knowledgeable bargain hunters! See you next year, at the same time…
