Sakhalin was suspended from participation in the Asian Hockey League for political reasons – 03.08.2022

TASS, 3 August. The hockey team of the professional sports club (PSK) Sakhalin has been suspended from participating in the upcoming season of the Asian Hockey League (AHL) due to the current political situation. This was announced by the press service of the club on Tuesday.

Director of the PSC “Sakhalin” Nikolay Sternichuk took part in the meeting of the AHL, which was held in the format of a videoconference.

– Following the meeting, the leadership of the league, in agreement with the teams, decided to remove the Sakhalin athletes from participating in the 2022/23 season tournament with the wording “due to the political situation,” the message says.

The Sakhalin team was created on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2013. The club is the only Russian representative of the AHL. At various times, clubs from Japan, South Korea and China competed for the tournament awards. Sakhalin won the title of AHL champion in the 2018/19 season, twice the team took second and third place in the regular season.
