Sainte-Croix Wind Farm: Switzerland’s Second Largest Wind Farm Now Operational

After their inauguration in October and a testing phase, the six wind turbines of Sainte-Croix (VD) are now operational. Their production began at the beginning of January.

The first wind farm in the canton of Vaud, and the second largest in Switzerland following that of Mont-Crosin (BE), produces “winter electricity”, the season when the wind blows the strongest, Romande Energie, project leader, recalled on Tuesday.

The six wind turbines must produce the equivalent of the consumption of all households and industries in Sainte-Croix, or 22 million kilowatt hours per year which will be injected into the network.

The wind turbines start moving automatically from a wind speed of 7.2 km/h. Their nacelle as well as their blades are oriented according to the direction and strength of the wind. Operation is possible with winds up to 100 km/h, the machines stopping beyond this speed, specifies Romande Energie in its press release.

Construction not finished

Although the wind turbines can now produce electricity, the project is not yet completely finished. Environmental compensation measures are still planned. The paths created for the site will be rehabilitated, while the wind turbine assembly platforms will be remodeled and seeded.

Civil engineering work will then be undertaken with the commune of Sainte-Croix to finalize the water purification as well as the undergrounding of the electrical and telephone network of the hamlets of Gittaz.

In terms of environmental monitoring, a radar will be installed in the spring to follow the migration of birds and trigger the shutdown of the wind turbines in order to minimize the risk of collision, notes Romande Energie.

For the record, it took 25 years of various procedures, including two years of construction, for this wind farm to see the light of day. Many other projects are currently in the process, particularly in the Vaud region where the greatest wind potential in the country is located.
