Sailing: Lovisa Karlsson and Anton Dahlberg take bronze in the mixed class 470

The Swedish duo was fourth before today’s final race. Austria was first, Spain second and Japan third before the decision. In order to pass Japan and clinch the bronze, Sweden needed to have a boat between the teams.

But it was Spain that Dahlberg/Karlsson passed instead. Sweden finished fourth in the race, while Spain came second last, in ninth. It was enough, as it required three boats between the teams for Sweden to pass the Spanish duo.

“Is so damn big”

When it dawned on Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson that they had won the bronze, there was great cheering on the boat.

– It’s so freaking great to come ashore and hug family and friends. We went out and did a fantastic race just like we wanted to do, says Karlsson to SVT Sport.

Austria won the gold and Japan took the silver.

Sweden has historically won 38 medals in sailing since 1896, of which ten gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze. Now it’s 14.

Sweden has now secured ten Olympic medals, including the team medal in table tennis.
