The African Union (AU) expressed in a statement its concern over the deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the Sahel region.

The African organization “expresses its deep concern over the rapid deterioration of the security, political and humanitarian situation in the Sahel region, in particular the continuation of terrorist attacks and the increase in the number of deaths, as well as the socio- economies that continue to affect the peace, stability and development of the region”.

She said she was very concerned regarding the resurgence of terrorist acts and their extension “from the Sahel region to the countries of the Gulf of Guinea, associated with the mutually reinforcing links between terrorism and unconstitutional changes of government”.

Through its note, the AU alerts to the multidimensional socio-economic challenges such as community tensions, underdevelopment, the impact of climate change, among others and condemns the terrorist attacks by armed and criminal groups once morest civilians and the institutions of the Sahel, “as well as once morest the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali and other international forces”.

However, the AU Executive Council would like to commend the efforts made by the G5 Sahel Joint Force and its Member States, which are hampering somewhat, “the combat capacities of terrorist, armed and criminal groups operating in the region of Sahel”. It calls for an intensification of efforts “in the mobilization of additional resources for the joint force”.
