Safe Release of Korean Nationals Kidnapped in Nigeria: Latest News and Updates

Two Koreans who were kidnapped by local armed forces in Nigeria were released safely after 17 days and are on their way home.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that two Korean nationals who were taken away by armed men following a shooting incident in Rivers State, southern Nigeria, on the 12th have been released.

These are Daewoo Engineering & Construction employees, men in their 50s and men in their 60s.

At the time, a kidnapping occurred while traveling to a nearby petrochemical plant site, and during the kidnapping, four local military bodyguards and two drivers were shot dead.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said, “Both are in good health,” and “After being examined at the hospital, they moved to a safe area and spoke with their families.”

Daewoo Engineering & Construction also said in a press release, “Currently, all kidnapped employees are in good health and will undergo local procedures and return to Korea as soon as possible.”

They are scheduled to return to Korea on New Year’s Day.

Daewoo Engineering & Construction said, “We would like to thank the governments of the Republic of Korea and Nigeria for mobilizing all diplomatic channels to provide support for the safe release of the kidnapped employees.”
