For a few months, Cyril Steensma has taken over the reins of Karmeliet, formerly Le Tourisme, a café located on the Grand Place with the idea of making it a social club, a place in which the human takes precedence over the commercial. And it is with this in mind that he launched the idea of a shuttle system for New Year’s Eve which, this year, coincides with the first of two drum rehearsals, the very first event of the Binchois carnival season .
It is in this context that Cyril, with his friend Thomas Pirrera and his company TP Easy Navette, set up this Sunday a shuttle system which will be responsible, for a small fee, for bringing his customers safely to their destination and this little It doesn’t matter how many glasses of beer or alcohol you drink. “It is very important to me that my customers can return home safely,” explains the manager of Karmeliet who was himself affected by a road tragedy in his entourage. “From the moment we offer our customers the opportunity to consume alcoholic beverages, in my opinion we must do everything to ensure that their evening goes well from start to finish. Hence this idea of setting up this shuttle system in which the Karmeliet does not take any profit. What comes first for me is the safety of my customers.”
New Year’s Eve this year coincides with the first drum rehearsal.
Cheaper than a taxi
No need to reserve a specific time. All the customer who feels the need will have to do is dial the number which will be displayed inside the establishment to activate the shuttle. “The price will obviously be different depending on the area to which the person(s) must be returned (up to 5 at a time, editor’s note). For example, for Binche and its surroundings, it will cost 10 euros, which is cheaper than a taxi. Our objective is not to enter into competition with taxis because this collaboration will only be occasional, during this particular New Year’s Eve and also during the three days of Carnival. However, we have not yet decided on the other drum rehearsals and soumonces.”
