Safe Havens in Jeopardy: US Cuts Refugee Resettlement Goals to Historic Low

– In recent years, Norway has received a historically high number of refugees from Ukraine. Then it is right and important that we cut the number of transfer refugees, to ensure that the pressure on, among other things, the municipalities does not become too high when it comes to integration, says Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) to NTB.

It was announced in advance that the government was going to tighten its immigration policy. In next year’s state budget, the government proposes to take in up to 200 quota refugees, the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness writes in a press release.

This means that the Støre government is once again cutting the number of quota refugees. In 2022, the number was 3,000, while last year there were 2,000 and 1,000 quota refugees this year.

– We have had a peak under the Conservative Party and FRP, where Norway accepted 3,000 quota refugees. We believe that the immigration policy must be strict and fair, and that the quota must be seen in the context of the arrivals, says Mehl.

Quota refugees are refugees that Norway accepts from the UN system for quota refugees. There are refugees who cannot return to their home country or are granted residence in the country they are staying in, and who are thus transferred to a third country.

The government has justified the constant cuts in the number of quota refugees with the high number of refugees from Ukraine. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Norway has taken in 100,000 refugees and displaced persons from the country.
