Excessive consumption of energy drinks can contain health risks, especially due to the sometimes high presence of caffeine in these cans. Here are some recommendations from Health Canada for safe drinking.

• Read the label for the amount of caffeine per serving

In Canada, caffeinated energy drinks can have up to a maximum of 180 mg of caffeine per serving.

In addition to caffeine, other ingredients may be blended in such as vitamins, minerals, taurine or herbal ingredients which may contain guarana and yerba mate which are natural sources of caffeine.

• No more than 400 mg of caffeine per day

“Adults 18 years and older should not consume more than 400 mg of caffeine per day,” Health Canada said in a statement on Monday.

Too much caffeine can cause insomnia, irritability, headaches and nervousness, among other things.

• Not recommended for children under 14 and pregnant people

The consumption of energy drinks containing caffeine is not recommended under the age of 14 or for pregnant or breastfeeding people.

• Check recalls of certain beverages

Health Canada has already recalled some of these energy drinks, in particular because of too much caffeine and inadequate labeling.
