An A400M took off on Saturday shortly following 10:00 a.m. towards Larnaca (Cyprus). He will return to Tel Aviv (Israel) as soon as the necessary contacts have been made on site with the Belgians who wish to be repatriated, the Belga agency learned from Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder.
“A military flight is safer and will allow evacuation in better security conditions,” Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said on Friday. The government initially wanted to schedule a flight from Tel Aviv via Brussels Airlines.
According to Minister Lahbib, there are currently around 10,000 Belgians who also have Israeli nationality on site, as well as at least 180 tourists. As of 4 p.m. on Friday, fewer than 100 Belgians had declared that they were stranded and wanted to return home.
“Defence once once more shows that it is ready to intervene immediately when Belgians need help,” welcomes Minister Dedonder.
